Amid growing discussions about a potential AIADMK-BJP reunion ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, senior BJP leader Sudhakar Reddy urged party workers and leaders to refrain from making statements about the alliance, emphasising that the party leadership will make a decision at the appropriate time.
His remarks came days after AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) hinted at the possibility of reuniting with the BJP, over a year after the AIADMK severed ties with the BJP, citing differences with its state chief K Annamalai.
In a video message, Reddy, the BJP’s state co-in-charge, reiterated that the high command would determine the alliance in consultation with local leaders when the time is right.
“And at any point of time, nobody is authorised to comment on the alliance in the ensuing assembly elections of 2026. High command will take a call with the due consultation with the local leadership and state leadership at that point of time,” Reddy said.
He added that some people from the BJP are “unnecessarily” posting about the alliance, which he observed was not good for the party and party leaders’ image.
“And I am appealing to leaders and candidates not to fall for any forces trying to disturb our party’s unity,” he stressed.
He remarked that the party’s primary task is to strengthen its presence at the grassroot level, while highlighting the central government’s schemes and achievements.
The AIADMK, in September 2023, severed its alliance with the BJP, citing Annamalai’s “unnecessary remarks” about AIADMK’s former leaders, including Dravidian icon CN Annadurai and the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, as well as criticism of the party’s policies.
However, on November 11, when asked about a potential AIADMK-BJP alliance, EPS said his party would consider forming an alliance with any party committed to ousting the “anti-people” DMK and willing to accept the AIADMK’s leadership.
“There are still 18 months left until the (state) elections. We will know who forms alliances with whom as the elections approach. As far as the AIADMK is concerned, parties that accept our leadership will be included. Our goal is to remove the anti-people DMK,” he stated.
However, after discussions about a possible reunion stirred political speculation, EPS later clarified that the AIADMK would not ally with the BJP.
